Roop, Peter and Connie. Louisiana Purchase (published in 2004 by Aladdin Paperbacks, an imprint of Simon and Schuster Children’s Publishing Division, 1230 Avenue of the Americas, New York City, NY 10012). This “Milestones in History” book for young readers chronicles the history of the Louisiana Purchase–how France settled the territory, how it came to be purchased by the United States, how Lewis and Clark explored it, and what has happened to it afterwards. It is really a very fine summary that would be quite useful in a third or fourth grader’s American history studies. Other “Milestones in History” books in this series include A Three Minute Speech (the Gettysburg Address), Nelly Bly, Cesar Chavez, Hard Labor (the first African American slaves), and The Alamo.
