Eyles, Heather. A Zoo in Our House (published in 1990 by Grand Central Publishing; republished in 1994 by Walker Books Ltd.). While going over a list of books that I have read to our boys, I saw this one written down and remembered it. I do not know if we obtained it from the library or bought it and then gave it away, but it was an interesting one for small children. In this Warner Juvenile Books Early Reader, a boy decides he’d like to have a zoo in his house after a visit to the zoo. However, he learns the down side of having pets, especially if those animals are a giraffe in the kitchen, a hippopotamus in the bathtub, or a lion on the sofa. At the end of the week, when Mom sends everyone back to the zoo, a gorilla remains behind. What children will find inviting are the clever, cartoonish pictures with important details, such as the lion sleeping with his teddy bear tucked under one paw.
