Burgess, Thornton W. The Adventures of Paddy the Beaver (published in 1917 by Little, Brown and Company, Boston, MA; republished 2002 by Dover Publications Inc., 31 E. 2nd St., Mineola, NY 11501). Thornton W. Burgess wrote over 170 children’s books, many of which tell the stories of the little creatures who lived in the Green Forest and Green Meadows near the Laughing Book and Shining Pool, including the adventures of Bobby Raccoon, Buster Bear, Chatterer the Red Squirrel, Danny Meadow Mouse, Grandfather Frog, Jerry Muskrat, Jimmy Skunk, Jonny Chuck, Peter Cottontail, Poor Mrs. Quack, Ricckly Porky, Reddy Fox, Mrs. Peter Rabbit, Old Mother West Wind, and Blacky the Crow. While I was reading this story about Paddy the Beaver, in which he creatures of the Green Forest get a big surprise when Paddy the Beaver decides to build a dam over the Laughing Brook and make a new home, aloud to our younger son Jeremy when he was small, there was a sense of “deja vu,” so it is possible that I may have read some of these as a child myself. In addition to including a lot of useful information about the animals themselves and about conservation, Burgess uses the plot to impart bits of wisdom about being kind to others, the importance of hard work, the need to make proper preparation, and other good lessons for life. I really liked this book.
