Sandin, Joan. The Long Way Westward (published in 1989 by Harper Collins Children’s Books, a division of Harper Collins Pulbishers, 10 E. 53rd St., New York City, NY 10022). This is “An I Can Read Book” for level 3 about the experiences of two young brothers, Carl Erik and Jonas, and their family who emigrate from Sweden to this country in the late 1860’s, from their arrival in New York through the long journey on the “emigrant train” to their new home in Minnesota. Identified as a fiction story and obviously written for young readers, it is based upon real events and is still an interesting story about an important part of our nation’s history. Sandin’s The Long Way to a New Land is a “prequel” telling of Carl Erik’s family in Sweden and their decision to leave for America.
