Bridges, Margaret Park. Am I Big or Little? (published in 2000 by Chronicle Books LLC). The title question so intrigues a ginger-haired preschooler that spends the course of a whole day exploring the concept of her size in relation to the rest of the world. Engaging her mother with the early morning question, “Mommy, am I little or am I big?”, she is told, “You’re both, sweet pea.” A patterned series of text follows in a daylong discussion, switching from the child’s questions to the adult’s answers. Dockray’s watercolor illustrations depicting the very active preschooler, her patient kitty, and her ragged but obviously beloved stuffed panda add zest to the story, which can be used for reading aloud to a group or sharing one-on-one. It doesn’t just talk about the sizes, big and small, but about the possibilities in which the child has a enormous amount of fun being both big and little, with the focus on the things that she can do.
