Dellinger, AnnettaMy First Easter Book (published in 1985 by Children’s Press).  Some people may consider us strange, even unorthodox, but while the members of our family are strong Christians who believe everything that the Bible says about Jesus Christ, including His resurrection from the dead, we do not celebrate Easter as a religious holiday to commemorate Christ’s resurrection.  However, we have observed it simply as a traditional holiday with Easter baskets, egg hunts, and such seasonal practices.  At the same time, we wanted our boys to know about the backgrounds of various holidays, so we used books like this one when they were learning how to read so that they might have extra practice in reading and also learn about our culture’s special days as an accompaniment to their “social studies.”

My First Easter Book, one of the series of “My First Holiday Books” from Children’s Press, contains poems which describe different aspects of Easter, such as coloring eggs, enjoying spring weather, wearing new clothes, and going on an Easter parade.  Other volumes in the set include My First Hanukkah Book by Aileen Fisher My First Fourth of July Book by Harriet W. Hodgson, My First Valentine’s Day Book by Marian Bennett, and My First Halloween Book by Colleen L. Reece.  We found “real books” like these to be very useful.
