Meister, CariGame Day (published in 2002 by Children’s Press).  “Batter up!” (short a and short u sounds).  “Home base” (long o and long a sounds).  When our boys were learning to read, we used a lot of early reading books for them to get extra practice, some of which we purchased and others we checked out of the library.  Both sons enjoyed baseball, but the younger one, Jeremy, especially liked the sport, so this Level A Rookie Reader, which uses the events of a baseball game to introduce long and short vowel sounds, was perfect for him.  Cari Meister is the author of several fiction and nonfiction books for children, including Tiny the Snow Dog and When Tiny Was Tiny.
