Boynton, Sandra. Birthday Monsters! (published in 1993 by Workman Publishing Company). “You hear your door come crashing down—those birthday monsters are in town!” And they’re going to bring havoc in the most extraordinary ways. We checked this “Boynton on Board” Board Book out of the library to help our older son Mark celebrate his birthday one year when he was learning how to read. The birthday child looks a lot like a hippopotamus. Her five friends, the birthday monsters, come just after dawn, bring presents, make a gigantic mess, and then clean it all up. Featuring Sandra Boynton’s lively melodic, rhyming text and humorous, full-color illustrations, this tale about a madcap crew of lovable party crashers will appeal to kids and adults alike.
Most people can’t help laughing at Birthday Monsters! It was a main selection of the Children’s Book-of-the-Month Club, offering parents the opportunity to discuss what happens at birthday parties, good vs. bad monsters/behavior, and how to be a good guest. The monsters themselves aren’t too scary and, of course, there is a happy ending. If some parents feel that their children might get upset at certain scenes and become concerned about whether the Monsters will come to their house, there is another birthday-related Boynton book, Happy Birthday Little Pookie. Sandra Boynton is a popular American humorist, songwriter, children’s author, and illustrator. Another of her board books that we checked out of the library was Doggies.
