Howard Jane R. When I’m Sleepy (published in 1980 by Penguin Group USA; 9th edition published in 1985 by E. P. Dutton). We checked this Picture Puffin book out of the library when our older son Mark was studying second grade health to give him extra reading practice and to accompany the information in his textbook about the importance of proper rest in addition to nutrition and exercise. A little girl wonders what it would be like to sleep like animals do–a kitten curled up in a basket, a bird in a downy nest, a raccoon lying in a hollow log, a giraffe standing up, or even a bat hanging upside down. As children start to yawn…and yawn… they can also be imagining how it would feel to sleep like their favorite animals while in the comfort of their own beds.
Both the author and the artist seem to possess intimate knowledge of small children. Jane R. Howard’s simple but sweet story and Lynne Cherry’s carefully detailed pictures together reveal a child’s sleepy fantasies. Many of the pictures are funny, but the overall feeling of the book is tender, dreamy, and lulling. It will soothe children, even as old as seven to ten, and adults alike and especially appeal to parents who are looking for ways to settle down active little boys and girls. A large, sturdy board book edition is available for the one to three year old set. The School Library Journal said, “Warm and comforting…. A nice addition to bedtime story collections.”
