Byars, Betsy. The Golly Sisters Go West (published in 1989 by HarperCollins). The irrepressible Golly Sisters, May-May and Rose, are heading west. They have new dresses and the best show on either side of the Mississippi. But can they keep their act together long enough to get this show on the road? The Golly Sisters, with their fancy dreams and funny adventures, are delightfully quirky, imaginative, and believable. Sue Truesdell’s illustrations perfectly complement the clever stories and add wonderful subtle detail, such as the horse’s reactions to the sisters’ predicaments.
There are two follow-up books. In Hooray for the Golly Sisters, May-May and Rose continue their adventures as they take their traveling road show to more audiences. And in The Golly Sisters Ride Again, May-May and Rose, those hilarious singing and dancing Golly sisters, return for five more zany adventures in which they find a talking rock, run into some bad luck, and take a vacation that’s pure Golly folly. “The Golly Sisters” books are very entertaining with their light humor and easy for a young reader because they are not too wordy. They will have children laughing their heads off.
