Teitelbaum, Michael, and Davis, Jim. Menace of the Mutanator: Garfield’s Pet Force #4 (published in 1998 by Scholastic). One of my wife’s favorite comic strips is “Garfield,” in part because the cartoonist James Robert “Jim” Davis (born July 28, 1945) was born in Marion, IN, and grew up on a small farm in Fairmount, IN, with his father James William Davis, mother Anna Catherine (Carter) Davis, brother Dave, and 25 cats. This is not far from her hometown of Ft. Wayne, IN. As a result, both of our boys like Garfield too. When he was older, our first son Mark bought several Garfield comic strip books. We never counted comic strip books for reading credit, and I generally don’t care for or review what are now referred to as “graphic novels,” but Scholastic came out with several Garfield-based story books called “Garfield’s Pet Force.”
In The Outrageous Origin: Garfield’s Pet Force, Book 1, written by Nancy Davis, four ordinary pets, Garfield, Odie, Arlene, and Nermal, are transported in the middle of an afternoon cookout,to an alternate universe where they are given magical superpowers which they must use to battle Vetvix, an evil veterinarian who wants to make all pets her slaves. In Menace of the Mutanator: Garfield’s Pet Force #4, the evil Vetvix has kidnapped some of the Pet Force members and combined them into one vicious creature–the Mutanator. Will Garzooka be able to free his friends from Vetvix’s spell? Other books in the series are Pie-Rat’s Revenge!: Garfield’s Pet Force, Book 2, also by Nancy Davis; K-Niner, Dog of Doom: Garfield’s Pet Force Book 3, by Jim Davis; and Attack of the Lethal Lizards: Garfield’s Pet Force, Book 5, also by Jim Davis.
