Ryan, Pam Munoz. Doug Chronicles, Book #10: The Funnie Family Vacation (published in 1999 by Disney Press). Doug is sure his summer is completely doomed when he has to go on a week-long camping trip with his entire family. The last thing that he wants to do on his summer vacation is to go camping with his family. To top it all off, he has to miss Beebe’s annual swim party. But this vacation turns out to have a few surprises, and Doug realizes that hanging out with his family and Judy isn’t that bad, especially when Patti Mayonnaise tells him how much she missed seeing him at the party. Another one of the infamous “Disney’s Doug Chronicles” books that our older son Mark liked to read when he was younger!

There is nothing in these books that is genuinely offensive or objectionable, but having previously reviewed Doug Chronicles #1: Lost in Space and The Doug Chronicles (#2): Porkchop to the Rescue, I just do not really care for them since I find them juvenile-ish to the extreme, although The Funnie Family Vacation seemed a tad better than the other two that I read. However, kids may find it funny when Doug and Judy are practically afraid of each other because they get really mad at each other, and when Doug is scared to go in the woods to have a picnic. The various books in the series were written by different individuals. Pam Muñoz Ryan is the award-winning author of more than thirty books for young readers, including the well-known novel Esperanza Rising.
