Lee, Sally O. Pop! Pop! Bam! Bam! (published in 2013 by Sally Lee Studio, 35 Locust St., #5, Danvers, MA 01923). How would you feel if you learned that there was a shooting at the school where your child was a student? Author Sally O. Lee’s Pop! Pop! Bam! Bam! is a story about an angry man who goes in to a school with a gun and hurts people. The students in the classroom hear a Pop! Pop! Bam! Bam! They first think that it might be a car backfiring, but when the teacher sees what is happening, she tells them to get under their desks or hide in the closet. Thus, it is also a story about those who survive and how they cope. What will happen to them?

From Columbine, CO, in 1999, to Sandy Hook, Newtown, CT, in 2010, school shootings have been headlined news events. They are a topic about which no one really wants to talk, especially with small children. Yet, they do occur, so many youngsters are fearful. The obvious purpose of this book is to help allay fears that children might have about the subject. The story is not told in a gruesome way, and there are no visual elements that would frighten children. Rather, Lee sensitively offers a reassuring message that gives teachers, parents, and schoolchildren a way of explaining what fearful things can happen and how to react with bravery. The book should prove highly useful.
