Akin, Todd.  Firing Back: Taking on the Party Bosses and Media Elite to Protect Our Faith and Freedom (published in 2014 by WND Books, a trademark of World Net Daily Inc., Washington, DC).  William Todd Akin (born 1947) was born in New York City, NY, and grew up in the Greater St. Louis, MO, area.  After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, and serving in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Akin worked in the private sector in the computer and steel industries. In 1988, he was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives, where he served until 2000, when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, in which he served Missouri’s 2nd congressional district until 2013.  Todd and his wife Lulli homeschooled their children in St. Louis County, where we lived from 2002 to 2008.  Their daughters played homeschool volleyball with our older son.  I worked with both Todd and Lulli when arranging speakers for the Greater St. Louis Area Home Educators Expo.  Though he was never our Congressman, our family for several years helped to set up the annual Independence Day celebration picnic at his home.  I know Todd Akin personally and hold him in the highest esteem.

In 2012, Akin ran for U. S. Senate against the incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill.  After winning a crowded Republican primary, he made some injudicious remarks on a taped television program discussion when asked about abortion and his opposition to exceptions for rape.  These remarks were misunderstood, and people jumped all over them to misrepresent what he believes.  He apologized for his incautious wording and explained what he really meant, but the damage was done.  Not only did the Democrats savagely attack him, but many of his fellow Republicans also turned on him and demanded that he withdraw from the race, which he refused to do.  He lost to McCaskill in an election year when many other Republicans, including Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, were also defeated as the Democrats falsely accused the Republican Party of waging a “war on women.”  This book chronicles these events and gives some general autobiographical background information to explain why Akin takes the stands that he does as a principled conservative and constitutionalist.

The bottom line is that Todd Akin is a God-fearing, decent, honest, patriotic man, the kind which leftists dearly detest, who was shafted by his own party.  Though I had made this decision long before these events occurred, what happened to Todd as recorded in this book explains why, even though I remain a Republican, plan to continue voting Republican, support the Republican party platform, and may donate to specific Republican candidates whom I feel that I can trust, never again will any of my money ever go to any of the national Republican organizations simply because they cannot be trusted to do the right thing.  With endorsements from Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas; Phyllis Schlafly of Eagle Forum; Steve  King, Congressman from Iowa; Michele Bachmann, Congresswoman from Minnesota; David Barton of Wall Builders; Tony Perkins of Family Research Council; and Oliver North, Lt. Col. USMC Ret., Firing Back is a must read for all genuine conservatives.
