Earhart, Kristin. Race the Wild: Rain Forest Relay, Book #1 (published in 2015 by Scholastic Inc., 557 Broadway, New York City, NY 10012). Russell Dean has signed up with his four best friends with whom he played football, Jayden, Dallas, Damien, and Gabe, to do The Wild Life competition, a four legged race in different ecosystems sponsored by Bull Gordon, and hopefully win a million dollars by following clues and answering questions about each habitat. The first environment is the Amazon rain forest in South America. But they changed the number on each team from five to four, so instead of being with his friends on the Green Team, he is now paired with three strangers, Sage Stevens, Mari Soto, and Dev Patel, on the Red Team. Their chaperone is Javier. The other teams are Yellow, Blue, Purple, and Orange.
Will the Red Team be able to work with each other? With such dangers to face as a slithering anaconda, poison dart frogs, a vicious jaguar, hungry piranhas, and getting lost in the jungle, can they even survive? And which team wins the first leg? In addition to the excitement, adventure, and suspense of the race, this Book 1 of 6 in the “Race the Wild” Series is chock full of interesting factual information about the Amazon rain forest along with its creatures, peoples, and other characteristics. The story also illustrates the importance of such qualities as respect, cooperation, and perseverance. School Library Journal says, “Fans of survival stories, adventure, puzzles, and mystery will enjoy this book.” Most eight year olds would have no problem reading it on their own. The next leg of the competition will take the teams to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia.
