Larkins, Kim. Emma Lou the Yorkie Poo: Breathing in the Calm (Published in 2019 by Loving Healing Press, 5145 Pontiac Trail, Ann Arbor, MI 48105). Emma Lou is a little Yorkie Poo dog with big worries. She loves playing with her best friend, Pearl, but Pearl is easily distracted and doesn’t always pay attention to Emma Lou’s worries. A new friend, Caleb the calico cat, has a suggestion that might enable them to calm their minds and bodies, so he introduces them to Gigi the gentle ginormous giraffe who had been so helpful to him. How can Gigi assist them? What new technique does she teach that may help Emma Lou with her anxiousness and Pearl with her distraction? And will it work?
Author Kim Larkins has a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Maine and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in private practice. For the past thirty years, she has dedicated her career working with children and families in the mental health and human services field. Most recently, Kim has worked in educational settings focused on the development of mindfulness skills in the classroom. Research shows that mindfulness in education improves attention, emotional regulation, compassion for self and others, and overall well-being for both students and teachers.
Emma Lou the Yorkie Poo: Breathing in the Calm will introduce people to some of the many benefits of a mindfulness practice. Readers of Emma Lou will learn how to help a child that worries, teach children a simple technique to practice mindfulness, and support the child’s emotional growth through experiencing a delightful and whimsical story. Parents, therapists, educators, counselors, and especially children, can benefit from Emma Lou and her friends’ curious adventure to a mindfulness experience. The book would be particularly useful for a child (or even an adult) who has problems with anxiety and fear.
