Parker, Dennis. A Standing Miracle: Pivotal Events That Sparked a Revolution and Led to America’s Independence (Published in 2018 by Dap Books). Concerning the American War of Independence, George Washington, in his Farewell Orders to Continental Army on November 2, 1783, said, “The disadvantageous circumstances on our part, under which the war was undertaken, can never be forgotten. The singular interpositions of Providence in our feeble condition were such, as could scarcely escape the attention of the most unobserving; while the unparalleled perseverance of the Armies of the United States, through almost every possible suffering and discouragement for the space of eight long years, was little short of a standing miracle.” In A Standing Miracle, author Dennis Parker, who also wrote Jefferson’s Masterpiece, provides an overview of the Revolutionary War period, showing how the American colonists became citizens of the United States of America rather than remain subjects of England ‘s King George III.
This incredible story is told through yearly timelines, from 1763 to 1783, along with short narratives that describe various events, some quite famous and other less well known, and tell the personal side of the story. In addition, there are reproductions of original documents and color images that will help students to visualize this important history through the eyes of artists. A Standing Miracle is a wonderful book for young people, middle school age and older, to gain a better knowledge and understanding of the twenty years of struggles, sacrifices, and war during that troubling but hopeful period of America’s history, and to learn how the American Revolution led to the Declaration of Independence and the establishment of the United States of America. The book would make a great complement to a homeschool study of the Revolutionary War.
