Sherman,Allan. The Rape of the A.P.E. (American Puritan Ethic): The Official History of the Sex Revolution, 1945-1973 by (Published in 1973 by Playboy Press). The Rape of the A*P*E* was a book by Allan Sherman, published in July 1973 by Playboy Press, regarding sex and its historical repression and resurgence in the United States.  The “A.P.E.” in the title is a play on the terms “ape” and the “American Puritan Ethic.”  I had forgotten about this book and having read it until I was recently reminded of it by seeing the author on a couple of old What’s My Line television shows via You Tube.  I was in my early twenties, so it must have been some time around 1974 to 1980, when a friend recommended the book to me, saying that it was really funny.

In fact, positive reviewers used such terms as “great laugh” and “hysterically funny” to describe it.  Admittedly, it does have its humorous moments, although much of them are risqué and raunchy.  But mostly it is just vulgar and obscene.  One could have guessed that this was so by noting the original publisher, Playboy Press.  Or it should have been determined from the subtitle, “The Obscening of America, an R.S.V.P. (Redeeming Social Value Pornography) Document.”  And the advertising blurb would have given this away.  “The Rape of the A*P*E* (American Puritan Ethic) is the ultimate sex book. It is the hilarious but true story of 27 salacious years of American history – the Sex Revolution – America’s longest and hottest war.”

Just an example in Allen Sherman’s introduction: “There is a brief but telling instant when a boy is taking off a girl’s underpants, during which she must give her assistance; if she doesn’t lift her behind a split second, it is impossible. Ours was a nation of girls who would rather die than openly contribute to their own seduction. It is a tribute to the girls of 1940 that they learned how to lift their asses without seeming to be lifting their asses. Sometimes they did it with a ho-hum and a stretch, pretending to be utterly bored, meanwhile shifting their position just long enough for the expert panty snatcher to do his job. I have witnessed it many times, this fantastic arabesque girls do and every time I am overwhelmed with the sheer creative artistry of it. It belongs among the great moments of ballet.”  I cannot recommend this book—at all!
